Day 1 - Aosta Valley

General

The first day of a spring journey to the Alps began in a valley that runs from the plains of Piedmont up into the highest mountains of western Europe. The Aosta Valley is a corridor, a deep trench between two walls of rock that widens at the bottom into meadows and narrows at the head into glaciers, and everything about it is vertical: the fields on the valley floor, the villages on the lower slopes, the forest above them, and the snow on the ridge that closes the view in every direction.

Arriving in April means arriving between two seasons. The meadows at the bottom of the valley were green and the first flowers were out, the villages were quiet after the winter and before the summer, and the road signs at the passes still carried the closure notices of the ski season. Above about fifteen hundred metres the snow lay in patches in the forest and in continuous fields on the open slopes, and the peaks that surrounded the valley were white from top to bottom.

The day was spent getting used to the place rather than sightseeing. The town at the centre of the valley has wide streets, a market, a cathedral and a set of Roman monuments that are older than most of what stands in the cities of northern Europe, and the first walk through it was a walk through the layers of the valley’s history: the Roman walls, the medieval towers, the eighteenth century houses and the concrete of the twentieth. In the evening the restaurants filled with walkers and the smell of the local cheese and the wood smoke of the fireplaces.

History

The valley has been a road since before there were roads. The Romans took it in 25 BC, defeating the Salassi who lived here and founding a colony at the point where the side valleys meet, and they settled three thousand veterans in it: Augusta Praetoria Salassorum, the city that is now Aosta. The plan they laid out, the rectangular street grid inside the walls, is still legible in the modern town, and the arch, the gate and the theatre of the Roman city are still standing among the shops.

After the empire the valley passed through the hands of the Burgundians, the Franks and the kingdom of Burgundy, and in the Middle Ages it became a collection of feudal lordships whose families built castles at the points where the side valleys could be controlled. The castle of Fénis, the most famous of them, belonged to the Challant family, and the towers of a dozen others stand above the vineyards and the roads in a way that makes the medieval map of the region unusually easy to read.

The German language arrived with the Walser, settlers from the Valais in what is now Switzerland, who moved into the highest valleys of the Alps between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. They took up land above the existing villages, kept their own dialects and their own form of timber building, and their communities survive in the upper valleys of the region. The valley was also a corridor for the pilgrims and the traders who crossed the passes to the north and the west, and the hospices on the Great and Little St Bernard passes are the monuments of that traffic.

The twentieth century added hydroelectricity, which dammed the side valleys and turned the region into one of the first electrified areas of Italy, and conservation, which turned the royal hunting reserve of the Gran Paradiso into a national park. The valley is also an autonomous region with its own statutes and two official languages, Italian and French, which is why the signs, the schools and the shop fronts are bilingual and why the local dialect is heard in the villages. For a visitor it means a place that is Italian in its cooking and its coffee and alpine in its architecture and its weather.

The valley’s position on the map explains most of its history. It is the shortest route between the plains of northern Italy and the passes that lead to France and Switzerland, and it has been used by armies, traders, pilgrims and migrants for as long as there have been roads in the Alps. The Romans put a road through it, the medieval lords taxed it, Napoleon’s armies crossed it, and the tunnels of the twentieth century ran under the passes that their predecessors had crossed on foot. Every layer of the valley’s architecture is a response to the same geography.

Geology

The Alps are a mountain chain made by collision. Africa moved north against Europe for tens of millions of years, the ocean floor between the two was pushed up and sliced into sheets, and the chain that resulted has its rocks stacked in a pile of slices in which older, deeper formations were carried upward over younger ones. The Aosta Valley runs through the middle of that structure, and the rocks on its two sides belong to different slices: the massifs of Mont Blanc and the Gran Paradiso on one side, the internal zones of the chain on the other.

The valley itself is a trough carved by ice. During the ice ages a glacier filled it to a depth of hundreds of metres, and the marks of that are everywhere: the smoothed rock on the shoulders of the valley, the moraines that hold small lakes behind them, the side valleys that hang above the main one and end in waterfalls, and the flat floor of the valley with its terraces of gravel. The ice has gone, the shape it produced remains, and the rivers that run through it carry the sediment of its retreat.

The peaks that close the valley at its head are the highest of western Europe. Mont Blanc rises to 4,807 metres on the border with France, the Matterhorn to the north east stands at 4,478 metres on the border with Switzerland, and the Gran Paradiso at 4,061 metres is the highest mountain that lies entirely within Italy. Their height is a matter of rock as well as of tectonics: all three are built of hard, resistant material that has survived the erosion which has worn down the country around them.

April is a month in which the geology of the valley is visible in the form of water. The snow at altitude is melting, the streams that drain it are full and milky with sediment, the waterfalls on the sides of the valley are at their most spectacular, and the rivers on the floor of the valley are brown rather than blue. The walker who comes in spring gets wet feet and long views; the one who comes in midsummer gets flowers and dry paths. Both see the same landform, one hard at work and one at rest.

The water of the valley is the other resource that the geology provides. The rivers that drain the glaciers are used for hydroelectricity, the springs that come out of the limestone and the schist are bottled and sold as mineral water, and the thermal springs that rise in a few places on the floor of the valley have been used since the Romans. The same rock that makes the mountains also stores and filters the water that comes out of them, and the fountains of every village run with it.

Things to See

The Aosta Valley is compact enough to be seen from a single base and varied enough to fill a week. The town of Aosta is the transport hub, with the railway along the valley and the roads that climb to the passes, and the side valleys radiate from it in every direction: Cogne and the Gran Paradiso to the south, the Valpelline and Bionaz to the north, Valgrisenche and La Thuile to the west, and the valleys that lead to the Matterhorn above Cervinia. Each has its own villages, its own slopes and its own character.

The castles are the other system to explore. There are dozens of them in the valley, and the best known, at Fénis, Issogne, Verrès and Sarre, are open to visitors and within an hour of each other by car or by the local buses. The castle trail of the region is well signposted, the interiors have been restored, and the combination of the buildings and the landscape explains more about the Middle Ages in the Alps than any museum could.

The passes at the head of the valley are worth a day in their own right. The Great St Bernard and the Little St Bernard both lead out of the region, both have a history of hospices and pilgrim traffic, and both are closed by snow for part of the year. The views from the top are of the sort that motorways have replaced everywhere else in Europe, and the roads that climb to them are a reminder of what travel across the Alps was like before the tunnels.

The food of the valley is the last of the introductions and one of the best. Fontina, the cheese of the valley, is made in the alpine pastures and sold in every village; the lard of Arnad is cured with herbs and served with rye bread; the local ham, the honey and the chestnuts are all products of the same small farms. The cooking is substantial and simple, the wine is light and dry, and the coffee at the end of a meal is the best argument for the fact that the region is Italian.

The practical advice for a first visit is short. The valley has a good bus and rail network, the passes are open from about May, and the walking is at its best between June and September. In April the lower trails are open, the higher ones are under snow, and the passes are closed; the villages, the castles and the town of Aosta are at their quietest and the light is at its clearest. A jacket belongs in the bag whatever the month, and the mountains make their own weather in the afternoon.

A word on the practicalities of a spring visit is worth having. The valley is reached by train from Turin in about two hours, and the buses that run up the side valleys are timed to connect with it; a car is useful but not essential. The hotels in the villages are cheaper than in the town, the tourist offices publish lists of the paths that are open, and the museums and castles keep shorter hours than the shops. In April the passes are closed, the ski lifts are stopping and the walking is limited to the lower slopes, and the reward is a valley without crowds and with snow on the peaks.
