2026 Morocco – Day 16 – From the Strait of Gibraltar to the Mediterranean Coast

Topographic map of southern and eastern Spain with a blue travel route extending from the Gibraltar area across Andalusia and southeastern Spain toward the Valencia region.

This journey across southern Spain follows a route from the Strait of Gibraltar in the south toward the Mediterranean coast in eastern Spain. Travelling north and east through Andalusia and onward to the Valencian region, the route reveals the changing character of southern Europe through mountain landscapes, historic cities, fertile valleys, and coastal scenery.

Beginning near Gibraltar, the route starts at one of Europe’s most distinctive geographical locations where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean and Europe lies only a short distance from Africa. The coastal atmosphere and views across the Strait create a memorable starting point before heading inland.

The road continues through Andalusia, one of Spain’s most diverse and culturally rich regions. Rolling hills, agricultural plains, mountain ranges, and historic settlements define the landscape. As elevation increases, wide panoramic views and changing terrain accompany the journey across the interior.

One of the highlights of the route is the area surrounding Granada and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Here, dramatic mountain scenery contrasts with open valleys and traditional rural landscapes. The region combines natural beauty with some of southern Spain’s most recognizable inland scenery.

Continuing eastward, the route gradually transitions back toward Mediterranean influences. Agricultural areas become more extensive, temperatures become milder, and the terrain opens toward the coast. The journey concludes near the Mediterranean shoreline, where coastal landscapes and urban centres mark the final stage of the crossing.

This route offers an ideal combination of scenic roads, changing landscapes, and long-distance travel experiences. From maritime southern gateways to mountain interiors and finally to the eastern Mediterranean coast, it presents a diverse view of southern Spain and rewards travellers with continuous variation throughout the journey.
