🚶 Walking the Rimbach-Steig | A Premium Trail in the Palatinate

On this hike we went once again into the Palatinate Forest. The route was this time the Rimbach Steig and was again in about 20 km long. As always, the Palatinate Forest was quite hilly but this time not so high elevation gain.

In this video, I go on a hike along the Rimbach-Steig, a premium hiking trail in the Palatinate Forest (Pfälzerwald) near Bad Dürkheim. The Rimbach-Steig is part of Germany’s network of certified “Qualitätswanderwege” and offers a varied mix of forest paths, vineyard views, rocky slopes, and cultural landmarks. Hiking here shows exactly what makes the Palatinate region so special: the close connection between nature, wine, and history.

The trail begins in Neuleiningen, a picturesque wine village with narrow alleys, half-timbered houses, and the ruins of a medieval castle perched above the valley. From the start, the hike combines culture with nature. Leaving the village, the path quickly enters vineyards, where rows of vines stretch across the slopes and open views reach out over the Rhine plain. In clear weather, the horizon seems endless, with the Odenwald and Taunus faintly visible in the distance.

From the vineyards, the Rimbach-Steig turns into the forest of the Pfälzerwald, Germany’s largest continuous forest. Here, shady trails wind through mixed woodlands of beech and oak, with sandstone outcrops adding colour and texture. The trail includes narrow rocky passages, steep climbs, and panoramic viewpoints, making it a rewarding but also demanding hike.

One highlight of the route is the constant change in landscape. The open vineyard slopes contrast with the enclosed forest valleys, and the rocky ridges give way to quiet meadows. This variety keeps the hike engaging and full of small surprises. Along the way, the trail also passes wayside crosses, chapels, and old vineyard huts—reminders of the long human history that shaped the region.

The trail is known for its scenic viewpoints, especially from the higher ridges. From here, hikers can enjoy sweeping views of the Palatinate Forest, the Rhine plain, and even across to the Black Forest on a clear day. These panoramic spots are perfect for pausing, taking in the scenery, and appreciating the landscape’s balance between cultivated and wild.

The difficulty level of the Rimbach-Steig is moderate to challenging. Steeper climbs and rocky sections require a bit of fitness and good footwear, but the effort is rewarded with constantly changing scenery and a sense of adventure. It is a trail that feels both natural and carefully designed, highlighting the best features of the region.

Hiking the Rimbach-Steig also means experiencing the wine culture of the Palatinate. The trail connects wine villages, and after the hike, many walkers enjoy stopping at local taverns to taste regional wines and food. This connection between outdoor activity and cultural tradition is one of the unique strengths of the area.

The atmosphere of the trail changes with the seasons. In spring, blossoms and fresh greenery make the valleys lively. Summer brings full vineyards and shaded forest paths. Autumn is especially impressive, when vineyards turn golden and the grape harvest fills the villages with activity. Even in winter, the bare vines and quiet woods give the hike a special charm.

This video captures the impression of hiking the Rimbach-Steig: the vineyards, the forests, the rocky slopes, and the cultural heritage that make the trail distinctive. It is not a step-by-step guide but a look at the variety and atmosphere of one of the Palatinate’s finest hikes.

For travelers, the Rimbach-Steig offers the best of the Pfälzerwald and Deutsche Weinstraße in one route. It is a hike for those who enjoy variety, panoramic views, and the combination of nature with tradition. Whether as a day trip or part of a longer stay in the Palatinate, hiking the Rimbach-Steig is a memorable experience.
