One of the best exploration trips you can make in the world is along the coast from Sydney south to Wollongong. The numerous small beaches and villages, as well as the steep cliffs and forests are unique and always a worthwhile destination for a trip. As I didn’t know whether I would ever come back to this area, I made one last detour to this region in unfortunately quite stormy weather.
Sydney to Batemans Bay Road Trip | Exploring Australia’s South Coast
On this day, I had set myself the task of driving as far south as possible from Sydney and exploring the area from Wollongong onwards. My experience only stretched a little further south than Wollongong and I wanted to see what it was like there. So I set off early in October 2024 and drove to Wollongong and beyond and then continued south from attraction to attraction.

As with the hike before, this time we headed south again into the beautiful area just south of Royal National Park. This time I had chosen a hike from Thirroul to Stanwell Park on the map. From the train station Thirroul it went through jungle vegetation and finally steeply up to the plateau. Then it went most of the time on the plateau in the direction of Stanwall Park and there again down to the sea and finally with the rail replacement service back to Sydney. The hike took place in January 2023.

Another interesting area that is quite easily accessible from Sydney are the stations just south of the Royal National Park. Unfortunately, the trip here also takes about 2 hours, but the trip to the Blue Mountains takes much longer. I’ve driven through the area a few times by car, but never hiked through. So I decided for an easy and quite short hike, early 2023 around the small village of Stanwell Park.
