This day had some bad and rainy weather. However, this did not stop us from continuing with our visit programme. We first visited a completely neglected World Heritage Site and then some more ruins. A road trip along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast is the perfect blend of history, breathtaking landscapes, charming seaside towns, and unforgettable moments. In this video, we travel from Demre to Dalyan, exploring one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country. Our adventure begins in Demre, a town steeped in history and culture. Demre is best known as the home of St. Nicholas, the historical figure who inspired the legend of Santa Claus. The Church of St. Nicholas is a fascinating place to explore, with its ancient mosaics and deep spiritual significance. Nearby, the ancient city of Myra offers incredible Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs and a remarkably well-preserved Roman theater. Walking among these ruins is like stepping back in time.
Leaving Demre, we head west along the stunning Turquoise Coast. The road winds past dramatic cliffs, turquoise bays, and lush green hills. This stretch of coastline is part of the famous Lycian Way, a long-distance hiking trail that attracts adventurers from around the world. Even by car, the scenery is jaw-dropping, with opportunities to stop at small villages, hidden beaches, and scenic viewpoints along the way.
One of the highlights of the journey is Kas, a beautiful seaside town that has become a favorite for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure. Kas is known for its whitewashed houses, narrow streets filled with bougainvillea, and a laid-back Mediterranean vibe. It’s also one of the best places in Turkey for diving and snorkeling, thanks to its clear waters and fascinating underwater sites. A stop here to stroll the harbor or enjoy a coffee overlooking the sea is a must.
Continuing along the coast, we pass through Kalkan, another charming town built on steep hills that descend toward a sparkling bay. Kalkan is famous for its rooftop restaurants and incredible sea views – a perfect spot for lunch or a sunset meal. Driving further, the road takes us past stretches of untouched coastline, olive groves, and small fishing villages, each with its own character and charm.
One of the natural highlights along the route is Patara Beach, one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in Turkey. With miles of golden sand backed by dunes and ancient ruins, it’s both a natural wonder and a historical treasure. Patara is also another important nesting site for loggerhead turtles, making it a place where nature and culture meet in harmony.
As we continue westward, the landscape slowly changes. We enter the region of Mugla, where pine-covered hills and fertile valleys dominate the view. The drive itself becomes part of the adventure, with winding mountain roads and scenic river crossings. Every bend in the road seems to reveal another breathtaking panorama.
Finally, we arrive in Dalyan, a town famous for its peaceful river setting and unique natural beauty. Dalyan’s most iconic sight is the Lycian Rock Tombs carved high into the cliffs, watching over the town for thousands of years. A boat trip along the Dalyan River is the perfect way to admire them up close, while also enjoying the serene waters and lush scenery.
Another highlight of Dalyan is Iztuzu Beach, also known as Turtle Beach. This long, sandy stretch is one of the most important nesting grounds for endangered loggerhead turtles, and its unspoiled beauty makes it a truly special place to visit. Dalyan itself is a welcoming town with cozy restaurants, riverside cafés, and a relaxed atmosphere – the perfect ending to an epic road trip.
