Our next destination was now Mersin, located in the south of Turkey. We first wanted to go further east, but finally decided against it, because there was just before a big earthquake with over 50,000 dead. We didn’t want to get into the situation of aftershocks there and besides, the infrastructure was missing everywhere. So we decided to go first to Mersin and from there along the Mediterranean coast towards Izmir.
A road trip from Cappadocia to Mersin is a journey that takes you from the magical fairy chimneys of central Turkey to the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean coast. It’s a route filled with contrasts – otherworldly landscapes, ancient underground cities, dramatic mountain passes, fertile valleys, and finally the fresh sea breeze of the Mediterranean. Our adventure begins in Cappadocia, one of the most unique destinations in the world. Known for its surreal landscapes of rock formations, cave dwellings, and hot-air balloons drifting across the sky at sunrise, Cappadocia is a place like no other. Before leaving, it’s worth visiting one of the underground cities such as Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, where ancient communities carved vast networks of tunnels and chambers beneath the earth. These mysterious sites set the tone for a journey steeped in history and wonder.
Heading south, the road soon climbs into the Taurus Mountains, one of Turkey’s most dramatic natural regions. The drive through mountain passes is an adventure in itself, with winding roads, deep valleys, and panoramic views stretching endlessly. Along the way, you’ll encounter traditional villages where life moves at a slower pace, shepherds guiding flocks, and roadside stalls selling fresh fruits, nuts, and honey from the region.
One of the most remarkable stops on this route is the Göksu Valley, a lush river valley that contrasts beautifully with the rocky mountain scenery. The Göksu River winds its way through green fields and forests, creating a fertile oasis in the midst of rugged terrain. This region is also historically significant – it’s part of the route where the Crusaders once marched toward the Holy Land, and many ancient ruins are scattered in the surrounding hills.
As we descend from the mountains, the climate changes and the air grows warmer. The first glimpse of the Mediterranean appears as the road leads toward Silifke, a historic town on the banks of the Göksu River. Silifke is home to a Byzantine castle perched on a hill, offering wide views of the valley and sea. Nearby, the Göksu Delta is a protected area rich in birdlife and an important nesting ground for loggerhead turtles. For nature lovers, this is a perfect place to pause and explore.
Not far from Silifke lies Kızkalesi (Ayas), famous for its Maiden’s Castle, a fortress built on a small island just offshore. The sight of the castle rising from the turquoise waters is unforgettable, especially at sunset. On land, the ruins of Korykos tell the story of the ancient city that once flourished here. Walking among the remnants of basilicas, walls, and cisterns with the sea in the background is a magical experience.
Finally, we arrive in Mersin, a bustling port city and one of the largest on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. Mersin is known for its lively harbor, palm-lined boulevards, and vibrant food culture. Don’t miss trying tantuni, the city’s signature dish – a spicy beef wrap that locals are proud of. The Mersin Archaeological Museum offers a deeper look into the region’s history, while the seaside promenade is the perfect place to relax and watch the sun set over the Mediterranean.
