Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) 2022 – Refugio Madonna della Neve to Oropa

The third stage on the GTA in 2022 was from Refugio Madonna della Neve to Oropa. Oropa is a special holy place in the Alps and has a basilica major, so one of the largest churches. The way from the Refugio is quite long, since the actual stage from the previous day would actually end later. However, the overnight stay at the Refugio Madonna della Neve in summer is simply unique and definitely recommended. We therefore reached Oropa again only in the evening and had to go again this time a small detour, because the one bridge is still closed.

Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) 2022 – St Antonio to Refugio Rivetti

After I had already completed some stages of the GTA (Grande Traversata delle Alpi) last year and finally started the GTA again with the Great Destroyer from the beginning, it was now time to continue the tour at the point where we had left off last year. So, as planned, we continued from St Antonio, although exactly this stage to Refugio Rivetti should not actually be chosen as the beginning. But we are trained and the weather was also excellent, at least at the beginning, so this was once again an excellent tour in the Alps.

2022 Italy – Grande Traversata delle Alpi

The Grande Traversata delle Alpi was developed in the late 20th century as a response to depopulation and economic decline in many alpine valleys of Piedmont. For centuries, these regions were sustained by agriculture, pastoralism, forestry, and cross-border trade. With industrialization and urban migration, many mountain villages lost population and economic relevance.

2021 Italy – Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) – I

The Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) is a long-distance hiking route that crosses the western Italian Alps from north to south, following a network of historic mountain paths. Extending for approximately 1,000 kilometers, the route runs through the Piedmont region, connecting high alpine passes, remote valleys, and small mountain villages rarely visited by mass tourism.
