2022 USA – V16 – Driving to Flagstaff Arizona

In this video, I take a road trip from Mesa Verde, Colorado, to Flagstaff, Arizona, with stops at some of the most iconic landmarks in the American Southwest. This route passes through landscapes full of history, culture, and breathtaking natural scenery, making it one of the most memorable drives in the region.

The journey begins in Mesa Verde National Park, known for its ancient cliff dwellings built by the Ancestral Puebloan people. This area holds a deep cultural significance and provides a connection to a civilization that lived here centuries ago. Leaving Mesa Verde behind, the road heads southwest across wide plateaus and desert terrain, where the vastness of the land becomes the dominant impression.

The first major stop along the way is the Four Corners Monument, the only place in the United States where four states meet: Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. Visitors can literally stand in four states at once, making it a fun and symbolic stop on the journey. The area also highlights the land of the Navajo Nation, which encompasses much of the surrounding region.

Continuing the trip brings the spectacular views of Monument Valley, one of the most famous landscapes in the American West. Towering sandstone buttes rise dramatically from the desert floor, their shapes instantly recognizable from countless films, photographs, and commercials. Driving through Monument Valley or stopping at viewpoints reveals the sheer scale and beauty of this place. The red earth, wide horizons, and iconic rock formations make it a highlight of any road trip.

Along the way, the route also passes Forrest Gump Point, sometimes called Tom Hanks Point, the spot made famous by the film Forrest Gump. Here, the long, straight road stretches toward the towering mesas in the distance, creating one of the most classic views of the American Southwest. It is a simple place—a highway through the desert—but the perspective is unforgettable and has become a favorite stop for travelers and photographers alike.

From there, the road leads deeper into Arizona, crossing more desert landscapes, occasional small towns, and long stretches of open road. The drive itself is part of the experience: the endless skies, shifting light, and changing colours of the desert make every mile unique.

The destination of the journey is Flagstaff, a mountain town in northern Arizona that contrasts strongly with the desert landscapes along the way. Surrounded by forests and located at higher elevation, Flagstaff offers cooler temperatures, a lively downtown, and a gateway to many attractions in northern Arizona, including the Grand Canyon. Arriving here feels like a transition from the dry desert to a more alpine environment, adding variety to the overall trip.

This road trip is not only about destinations but also about the experience of traveling through the landscapes of the Southwest. From ancient history at Mesa Verde to the symbolic Four Corners, from the cinematic beauty of Monument Valley to the cultural stop at Forrest Gump Point, and finally to the forests of Flagstaff, the route covers an extraordinary range of scenery and atmosphere.

The video provides a general impression of the trip, capturing the open roads, the dramatic views, and the feeling of moving across such a vast and diverse part of the United States. It is not just about the famous stops, but also about the journey itself—the spaces between, the small discoveries, and the rhythm of the road.

For anyone traveling through the Southwest, this route is one of the most rewarding. It combines cultural history, iconic landscapes, and the simple joy of driving through wide open spaces. From Mesa Verde to Flagstaff, it is a journey that leaves lasting memories.
