We were supposed to spend the morning in Phoenix at the Desert Botanical Garden. However, these rip-off artists wanted some outrageous price as entrance fee, whereupon we laughed at them and left again. We decided to do a short hike in the desert itself. After three weeks in the USA we slowly got used to the lifestyle and especially in the heat of Phoenix to the big drinking vessels from the gas station. I had the morning already two sugar-free colas behind me and was then on the way to give me the third on the hike. The heat was really quite strong and really should not be neglected.
In this video, I go on a hike in the desert landscape around Phoenix, Arizona. The Phoenix area is surrounded by mountains, rocky hills, and wide valleys, making it one of the best urban regions in the United States for desert hiking. Within a short drive from the city, it is possible to step into a very different world – one of cactus-covered slopes, open desert views, and the unique sights and sounds of the Sonoran Desert.
Hiking around Phoenix means experiencing a landscape that is both rugged and beautiful. Trails wind through rocky terrain, climb to viewpoints, and cross valleys filled with desert plants. The most striking feature of the area is the presence of the saguaro cactus, which grows tall and dominates the scenery. These giant cacti, along with prickly pear, barrel cactus, and cholla, give the desert its unique character. Depending on the season, wildflowers and blooming cactus add bright colours to the otherwise dry landscape.
The desert is not empty; it is full of life adapted to the climate. Birds such as hawks, quail, and roadrunners can often be spotted, while lizards dart across the trails. In the early morning or evening, it is sometimes possible to see rabbits, coyotes, or other desert animals. The silence of the desert, broken only by the sound of wind or distant calls of birds, adds to the experience of hiking here.
Many trails around Phoenix climb into the small mountain ranges that surround the city. From the ridgelines, there are wide views over the desert and the urban area below. These viewpoints show the contrast between the modern city and the natural desert environment that surrounds it. The hikes vary from short and easy walks to steep, challenging climbs, so there are options for all levels of hikers.
The desert climate makes preparation important. Temperatures can rise quickly, especially in summer, when hiking is best done very early in the morning or avoided altogether. In cooler months, the conditions are much more comfortable, with pleasant daytime temperatures. Carrying enough water, wearing sun protection, and being mindful of the heat are essential for hiking in the Phoenix area.
A desert hike also provides a chance to experience the unique geology of the region. The mountains around Phoenix are formed of rugged rock, shaped by erosion and time. Trails often pass boulders, rocky outcrops, and desert washes that reveal the harsh but fascinating character of the landscape.
For visitors, hiking in the desert near Phoenix is a reminder that nature and wilderness are very close to the city. Within minutes, it is possible to leave behind the busy streets and enter a landscape that feels remote and timeless. The desert has a beauty that is not always obvious at first glance, but the longer one spends walking through it, the more details appear – from the patterns on cactus spines to the colours of rocks in the changing light.
This video is not a guide to a specific trail but an overview of the experience of hiking in the desert around Phoenix. It shows the character of the Sonoran Desert, the views from the trails, and the feeling of walking through this distinctive environment.
A hike in the desert is both physical and reflective. It is a chance to move through open space, to enjoy the silence, and to see landscapes that are unlike anywhere else. For many people, the desert becomes a place of calm and perspective. Around Phoenix, with its combination of city and wilderness, this experience is always close at hand.
