This hike took place on the edge of the Stromberg/Heuchelberg Nature Park in Baden-Wuerttemberg in Germany in the spring of 2021 around the village of Oberderdingen. The hike was first through the forests of the Stromberg, then through a quite hidden valley with vineyards, further over quite open fields and finally the last part through the forest again. Unfortunately, it was relatively cold and windy that day, but nevertheless the route was well worth seeing.
In this video, I go on a hike around Oberderdingen, a small town in the Kraichgau region of Baden-Württemberg. Surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and forested ridges, Oberderdingen is a perfect example of the “land of 1,000 hills.” Hiking here means moving through a landscape shaped by both nature and tradition, where every trail reveals new views of the countryside and traces of local culture.
Oberderdingen itself has a long history. The town centre features half-timbered houses, old courtyards, and narrow streets, which reflect the rural heritage of the Kraichgau. From here, trails quickly lead out into the surrounding hills. It is a transition from history to nature that feels seamless—one moment among old houses, the next surrounded by vineyards and meadows.
The vineyards are one of the highlights of hiking around Oberderdingen. The region is well-known for its wine, and the slopes around the town are patterned with rows of vines. Walking along these paths offers wide views over the hills, especially in autumn during the grape harvest. The colours of the vineyards change with the seasons, giving the landscape a constantly shifting character.
Beyond the vineyards, the forests offer shade and quiet. Beech and oak trees dominate the slopes, creating a cool and calm atmosphere in summer and turning into a sea of gold and red in autumn. Hiking into these woods brings a different rhythm—slower, more reflective, and full of small details like the sound of birds or the rustle of leaves.
The fields and meadows between the villages show another side of the landscape. Here, the trails cross open ground where you can see the gentle hills stretch in every direction. In spring, the meadows are full of wildflowers; in summer, they glow with wheat and sunflowers. These open views are a strong contrast to the enclosed forest trails and make the hikes feel varied.
The cultural side of the hike is never far away. Small chapels, crosses, and old farm buildings appear along the trails, reminders of the deep history of the Kraichgau. The nearby hamlets and wine-growing villages also add to the atmosphere, with their traditional architecture and a sense of rural life that continues much as it has for centuries.
One of the joys of hiking here is the authentic and quiet atmosphere. The Kraichgau is not a major tourist region, so the trails are often peaceful and uncrowded. This makes the experience feel personal, as though you are discovering a landscape at your own pace.
The views are another highlight. From certain points above Oberderdingen, the horizon stretches wide across the rolling hills, with the Black Forest to the south and the Odenwald to the north sometimes visible on clear days. These perspectives give a sense of place, showing how Oberderdingen fits into the wider landscape of southwestern Germany.
