2025 Italy – Motorbike Aosta Valley

The Aosta Valley (Valle d’Aosta) is a mountainous region in north-western Italy, distinguished by its exceptional Alpine environment and strong cultural identity. Covering an area of approximately 3,260 square kilometers, it is the smallest Italian region, yet one of the most geographically complex. The territory is organized around a main valley carved by the Dora Baltea River, with numerous side valleys extending toward some of the highest mountain groups in Europe.

⚡ The Devil’s Bargain | Exploring Pont-Saint-Martin, Italy

Pont Saint Martin in the Aosta Valley was the end of my second trip on the GTA. Here, on the same day, I made a forced march from Refugio Coda early in the morning with a 2000m altitude loss descent into the Aosta Valley. After still being in the cold at the top, it was almost 30 degrees summery warm in the Italian town. I had to get myself two ice creams straight away and was able to take a brief look at the thousand-year-old city in the evening. There was already a settlement there in Roman times and the bridge was 2000 years old!

Hiking the GTA in the Italian Alps – Part 10 – Refugio Coda – Pont Saint Martin

This stage marked the final section of my second tour on the Grande Traversata delle Alpi. I set off early in the morning from Rifugio Coda, where I had recovered overnight. At altitude, the cold was intense, and I had briefly struggled with mild hypothermia, but by morning I was fit again and ready to continue.

Unfortunately, the day began entirely shrouded in fog. While the route itself was not technically difficult, the conditions made it dangerous due to poor visibility and exposed sections along the ridge. The trail followed the ridgeline for a long stretch, constantly ascending and descending. At one point, the clouds briefly lifted, revealing a spectacular view of the Aosta Valley and the surrounding valleys.

🏰 Exploring Saint Germain Castle Ruin | Hidden Gem of the Aosta Valley

AOSTA VALLEY, ITALY: On a trip through the Valle d’Aosta we noticed an impressive old castle ruin on a hill. The old ruin was Saint Germain Castle. The ruin can be reached from a small parking place at an old church directly over a short but steep footpath. The ruin was surrounded by a fence, but the gate was open and we could visit it. Unfortunately there is very little to know about this ruin. The castle is said to have been abandoned since the 1660s and was probably built around the 13th century.
